AS9100 is an aerospace standard based on the ISO 9001 quality system requirements which includes additional  requirements to satisfy DOD, NASA and FAA quality requirements. The intent of the standard is to establish a single quality management system for use within the aerospace industry. The standard is supported by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG).

AS9100 includes the quality management standards for the aviation, space and defense industry, and is used by the world’s leading aerospace companies and applied throughout their supply chains. AS9100 can be used by organizations across the sector, including design, manufacturing, maintenance, and distributing companies. For company's seeking to become suppliers of large aerospace OEM's it should be noted that AS9100 is a pre-requisite for consideration to become a supplier.

How the PDCA cycle is represented in the standard:

  • Sections 4, 5, and 6 - The "planning" sections
  • Sections 7 and 8 - The "doing" sections
  • Section 9 - The "checking" section
  • Section 10 - The "acting" section

You can also break the standard down into the following 4 levels:

  • Level 1 - Quality Manual, Policy, Objectives, and QMS Processes (Why we do what we do)
  • Level 2 - QMS Procedures (When we do what we do and who does it)
  • Level 3 - QMS Work Instructions, Forms, Matrices (How we do what we do)
  • Level 4 - QMS Records (Proof that we did what we said we would do)
